Sheinbaum boasts environmental progress at Lake Texcoco: "Nature is doing its job."

President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted the progress made in the ecological restoration of Lake Texcoco this Friday during her morning press conference at the National Palace. She presented images and videos of the protected area that now houses the Ecological Park, on the site where the canceled New Mexico City International Airport (NAICM) was originally planned to be built.
“Texcoco, just look at the beauty. It's there,” the governor said, showing scenes of the bodies of water and the restored biodiversity, highlighting that recent rains have favored the rebirth of the ecosystem.
Currently, the protected area covers more than 14,000 hectares, of which 1,800 are bodies of water. This is equivalent to 17 times the size of Chapultepec Park, making it a green lung and a "climate insurance" for the Valley of Mexico, according to the video presented by the president.
In addition to its environmental impact, the space also preserves the traditions and biocultural elements of local communities, adding social and cultural value to the project.
The habitat recovery has been evident. While in 2017 only 30,000 birds were recorded, today it is estimated that more than 230,000 live there, including native, migratory, and some endangered species.
"Lake Texcoco is home to our birds. What we have now, and what will always come, are our birds," the official video emphasizes.
The park offers spaces for recreational activities such as cycling, hiking, culture, and sports, in an environment that visitors describe as spacious, restored, and safe for connecting with nature.
